Home Decor Trend: Fur

Maybe it's just the increasingly cold weather that is starting to influence my decorating style, or maybe it's just the fact that (faux) fur home decor is fun! This trend is very easy to incorporate into any home, simply through a blanket or throw pillow on a sofa, chair, or as extra bedding accents. These throws and pillows are great winter gift ideas also! If you're loving this trend as much as I am and want a more permanent look, try incorporating fur through a more substantial piece like a side chair, bean bag (great for a family den or kids space), or ottoman.

Bedroom Design Reveal

After a lot of deliberation, placing orders, and finally receiving deliveries, our bedroom is pretty much complete (minus a few accents here and there). We went for an overall grey look with touches of purple, gold, black and white. The headboard is perfect for leaning against when reading or watching TV, and the oversized nightstands provide more storage then the average nightstand (which comes in handy in a teeny, tiny apartment). But my favorite part is the touch of gold that the table lamps and knobs provide! I've been very into the gold trend recently, and this was the perfect way to incorporate it into our space.

Like the look? Get the items here:

Headboard: West Elm Tall Grid Tufted Headboard (in Brushed Heathered Cotton, Gray Haze)

Bedroom Update

Now that we are all settled into our new apartment, I decided that it was time to give our bedroom a bit of an overhaul. After much deliberation, we finally selected an upholstered headboard from West Elm. The simple rectangular shape and tailored tufting gives it a classic feel. I love the medium grey fabric and feel that it will really anchor the space.

Next came the Safavieh nightstands. They are relatively large (26"W x 26"H) which always feels better in a space then teeny, tiny little things on either side of the bed. They are a lighter shade of grey and will coordinate nicely with our existing Target bedding (#2). I am toying with the idea of buying new crisp white bedding, but that'll be a later addition.

Then I came across these amazing Geode knobs from Anthropologie and knew that they had to become a part of this room. We'll replace the little knobs on the nightstands with these beauties and it'll give them an entirely new look. To coordinate with the gold accents on the knobs, I wanted to bring in these tall, gold table lamps. Their funky shape and impressive height will allow them to become a focal point in the room.

Stay tuned for the final reveal!

Gray + Blue Master Bedroom

I just finished up designing this contemporary gray, white and blue master bedroom for a Good Style Design client, and I love the way it turned out (if I do say so myself)! Clean lines and a neutral palate make it a cozy and comfortable place to relax.

Incorporating fun accents like the teal-blue chair and matching ottoman, round faceted mirror, and clear Lucite laptop desk add a sense of whimsy to the space. The bold, graphic patterns on the area rug and window treatments add visual movement to the room and break up the solid elements. The best part is that all pieces are easily available and available for purchase online.

Favorite Patterns: Ikat

Adding pattern to a space is always a great way to liven up the look. A very popular pattern these days is Ikat. Traditionally, Ikat is a fabric in which the yarns have been tie-dyed before weaving (Merriam-Webster). Ikats come in a variety of colors and patterns, and can be found on almost any home decor item that you can imagine. I even have an Ikat pillow in my new throw pillow line! Get inspired by the great Ikat-filled spaces and products below.

Grown-up Bean Bag Chairs

Remember those circular bean bag chairs that you had as a kid? They were fun and comfortable, but not so great looking. Recently I've come across some bean bag chairs that are much more stylish and work perfectly in a "grown-up" home. When entertaining, most of us could use some extra seating (especially apartment dwellers like myself), and these options will do the trick.

Casual Living Space

Recently I began working on the design of a living and dining space for a family friend. I really feel that the best way to help someone imagine the future look of a room is to create an inspiration board. Seeing all of the selected furniture for a space in a single image makes a finished product much easier to imagine. My vision for this project is to create a comfortable and inviting space that is full of intimate seating areas.

Decorating with Succulents

Don't have a green thumb? Luckily that doesn't mean that your home has to be free of plants and flowers. Succulents are a collection of plants that are very low maintenance, yet extremely beautiful. They contain a range of natural colors such as orange, green, and eggplant. Usually sold in decorative planters, succulents are the perfect addition to any home's decor. If you're low on surface space, they can also be displayed in hanging terrariums or vertical planters. A lively plant or bunch of flowers is always the perfect addition to any space. Here are a few options that are home-ready.

Good Style Design: Steely Grey Bedroom

Last week I posted one of the many Good Style Design living room inspiration boards, and next up is the bedroom. This look is one of my favorites for the bedroom, because it's calm, neutral, and stylish. It has a transitional feel, meaning it's the perfect balance of contemporary and traditional. The mirrored night stands give a touch a glamour without getting too "girly", and the patterned area rug adds visual interest to the space. The owl lamp finishes off the room by adding an element of fun.

5 Home New Year's Resolutions

Don't get me wrong, it's great to promise yourself that you'll exercise more, travel often, or eat less chocolate, but why not focus instead on giving your home a little love this year? Being that it's a place where you spend quite a bit of time, it should probably be as important as loosing those lingering five pounds (well, maybe almost as important).

Here are a few easy, yet impactful things that you can promise your home this year and actually follow-through with...

1. Switch out plain sofa pillows for a pop of color or pattern.

2. Update bed linens. Incorporate a new duvet, accent pillows, blanket, or sheet set for a new look in your bedroom.

3. Spice up your dish ware. Go for a collection of one, two, or three colors to make an impact on your table settings.

4. Throw on a throw. Not only will throws keep you and your guests comfortable, but they will also add another layer of color and texture to your space.

5. Add easy artwork. Start a collection of photos or frame an inexpensive poster to give your room a new focus.
