Color Trend: Cobalt Blue

Cobalt blue is one of my favorite recent color trends. It can be applied to almost any space, in a large (paint all the walls) or small (add a throw pillow or two) amount. It's a classic color that sometimes borders on navy, and is appropriate for every style from traditional to contemporary and everything in between. Colors such as coral, pink, and gold are perfect compliments to create a complete scheme that includes cobalt. Finish it off with pops of bright white molding, accessories and accent pieces of furniture.

Favorite Patterns: Ikat

Adding pattern to a space is always a great way to liven up the look. A very popular pattern these days is Ikat. Traditionally, Ikat is a fabric in which the yarns have been tie-dyed before weaving (Merriam-Webster). Ikats come in a variety of colors and patterns, and can be found on almost any home decor item that you can imagine. I even have an Ikat pillow in my new throw pillow line! Get inspired by the great Ikat-filled spaces and products below.

Painted Headboards

Every bedroom looks a bit more complete with some sort of headboard. If you're tight on space or budget, consider creating a painted headboard directly on the wall behind your bed. Measure and paint a simple rectangle for an added field of color. Or opt for more detail by using a stencil -- this will give a high-end look without too much effort. An even easier option is a wall decal. These work best on flat, clean surfaces, so if you have a wall with any texture to it then this isn't the best option for you. Visit allposters.com for a large selection of wall decals.

Painted Window Frames

A relatively quick and easy way to add major impact to a space is to paint the window frames a color that coordinates with the rest of the room. This will brighten any space and turn your windows into more of a focal point. Windows are an architectural element of a room that should be highlighted, not always hidden by drapes.

Painted Walls: Chevron

The chevron (aka: zig-zag) is a well-known pattern that has definitely maintained its popularity over the years. One of my favorite ways to incorporate this pattern into a space is to paint it on an accent wall. It can instantly add bold personality to any room. A larger scaled chevron makes more of a statement while a smaller scaled version of the pattern is a bit more subtle. I would suggest sticking with lighter colors to achieve a calmer look that won't completely overpower your space.

Pantone Color of the Year 2013: Emerald

Pantone has named emerald as its color of the year for 2013. If you're not familiar with Pantone, it is a company that is, in many opinions, the expert in color. So if you're ready to give your home an update try incorporating this trendy color. For maximum impact paint an entire room in the hue. Otherwise, consider reupholstering a chair, adding throw pillows, or outfitting your windows in emerald. One tip to keep in mind when shopping for this style: a lighter shade of emerald gives a more contemporary look, while a darker shade tends to be more traditional.

Small Spaces: Loft Beds

Living in a small space? When floor space is limited, it's important to think vertically. Loft beds are a great way to utilize otherwise unused real estate. If you're living in a rental, a relatively inexpensive piece from a furniture store such as IKEA will do the trick. Make it a little more personal by painting the bed frame a fun color and adding coordinating bed linens. If you are a homeowner or intend on staying in your space for a while, it might be worth your while to invest in a built-in loft bed. Incorporate additional storage, a seating area, dining table, or anything else that fits your living needs.

Photo Walls

Personal photos are the perfect way to make your home a little more you. Your home should be a place that makes you feel comfortable and happy, and what better way make it that way then to surround yourself with images of the people, places, and memories that you love? Create a photo collection by organizing all of your photos in a specific way. For example, select photos that are all the same size and frame them in identical frames. Hang the collection to form a large square or rectangle for a cohesive and sleek look. Achieve a less systematic look by alternating the sizes of each frame, but keeping the color the same. Arrange the frames to fill a wall (kind of like a puzzle), or lean them against a series of shelves.

Delightful Daybeds

Daybeds are the perfect combination between comfortable seating and ideal nap-time location. After situating your daybed in a nap-worthy spot like in a relaxing sun room or on a porch, it's time to give it some personality. Load up your daybed with throw pillows to fill in some of the depth, making it easier to comfortably sit on. With some slight pillow rearrangement, a daybed can instantly become your go-to spot for a little shut-eye. Now if I could only find time for a nap...
