Beachy Bedrooms

No matter where I end up settling down, I will undoubtedly create a home that has a beachy feel. I have always loved the light colors, natural materials, and laid-back look of beach house decor. These beachy bedrooms are stylish spaces that serve as a calm retreat.

Want to achieve a similar look? Keep these things in mind:

• Stick with furniture that is white, wood (distressed or white-washed is best for this style), or rattan.
• Create a calm color scheme with a combination of pale versions of blue, teal, yellow, and tan.
• Select fabrics that are cotton or linen based.
• Nothing says "beachy" quite like a jute area rug.
• When in doubt, add white. Bright white ceilings, molding, furniture, and accessories will keep the look fresh and clean.

Perfect Little Reading Nooks

If you're as much of a book-lover as I am, then you probably have a go-to place to read. Whether it be in your bed or on the beach, most of us have a favorite place to break out the latest book that we can't seem to put down. My ideal reading space is cozy and comfortable; a quiet place where I can let myself escape.

A little "nook" created as a dedicated place for reading seems like the ideal space for any reader.
Whether you have a little space or a lot, create an area specifically designed for some one-on-one book time. Here are a few things to keep in mind when creating your own reading nook:

• Comfort is key, so load on the pillows. 
• Nearby shelves for all of your books are essential. 
• Keep in mind that a location near a window is best, because natural light is ideal for reading.
• Most importantly, make it a relaxing place where you can go to unwind.

Stylish Stairs: Patterned

As I talked about in last week's post, stairs are a very visible element of many homes, and they should not be overlooked. Give your staircase a creative style update and it will instantly become a focal point in your home.

If you're feeling a bit more adventurous then simply painting your stairs, try using various stencils and paint to create a unique pattern on each "rise" (the vertical part of each stair). Paint the same pattern all the way up, or vary the pattern every couple of stairs. Use multiple colors for a richer look, or a single color to keep things a bit simpler. Not crafty enough for stenciling? Pick out one or more styles of wallpaper, cut them to the right size, and apply. This will give you a perfect detailed pattern each time.
